Required Summer Reading Program
Our focus for the summer reading program is to encourage students to read on a daily basis and make reading an enjoyable experience. Your local library offers a wide variety of books at every reading level. We recommend that each student have his/her own library card and encourage participation in the summer programs offered at the library.
The required summer reading for each grade is listed below.
Children entering:
Grade 1 Hello, Red Fox by Eric Carle and at least five other books your child can read on his/her own. Please select books from the “Step Into Reading” or “I Can Read It” style of books on the appropriate level for your child.
Grade 2 Please read at least two books from the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park and/or the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne, and at least two other books based on the student’s interests and reading level.
Grade 3 Marvin Redpost: Kidnapped at Birth by Louis Sachar,
The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh, and at least two other books based on the student’s interests and reading level.
Grade 4 Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo,
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume, and at least two other books based on the student’s interests and reading level.
Grade 5 Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare and at least two other books based on the student’s interests and reading level.
Grade 6 Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, Pinballs by Betsy Byars, and one of the following:
Penny from Heaven by Jennifer Holm
Heat by Mike Lupica
Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis
A Family Apart (Orphan Train Series) by Joan Lowry
Flip Flop Girl by Katherine Patterson
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Grade 7 My Brother Sam is Dead by James L. Collier,
Crash by Jerry Spinelli, and at least one other book based on the student’s interests and reading level.
Grade 8 The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen,
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee,
Exploring the Titanic by Robert Ballard,
Bridge
to
book based on the student’s interests and reading level.
